The 2026 WA APCO-NENA Fall Conference asks public-safety leaders to imagine “the center we want to work in.”
That center should not force telecommunicators to choose between fast access and secure access.
It should not encourage employees to leave sessions open because signing back in takes too long. It should not require the incoming shift to continue working under someone else’s identity. And it should not leave IT guessing who was actually using a shared workstation.

The WA APCO-NENA Fall Conference takes place October 13–15 at the Kitsap Conference Center. The 2026 theme is “Culture Reimagined: Building the center we want to work in,” with training, keynote programming, networking and the annual chapter awards ceremony.

1. The Start of the Shift
A telecommunicator arrives at a shared console.
They need access to Windows, CAD, mapping, records and other critical resources. They should not have to type multiple passwords, wait for a phone prompt or continue using the previous employee’s session.
GateKeeper helps authorized users access shared Windows workstations using organization-approved authentication methods, including proximity-based and hardware-token workflows. The objective is faster access without losing individual accountability.
2. The Moment Someone Steps Away
A telecommunicator leaves the console to speak with a supervisor, assist a colleague or respond to an operational need.
Traditional inactivity timeouts create an uncomfortable choice. Set the timeout too long, and an unattended workstation remains exposed. Set it too short, and the computer locks while someone is still actively working.
GateKeeper can automatically secure the workstation when the authorized user moves away. The agency controls whether the configured action locks the computer, disconnects the session for fast user switching or signs the user out.
3. The Handoff
The next employee takes the position.
They should begin under their own identity—not inherit the previous telecommunicator’s open session.
