What is Defense-in-Depth?

Definition and Purpose

Defense-in-Depth is a cybersecurity strategy that employs multiple layers of defense mechanisms to protect data, systems, and networks from unauthorized access or attacks. Instead of relying on a single security measure, this approach combines technical, administrative, and physical controls—such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, access management, employee training, and endpoint protection. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of a successful breach by ensuring that if one layer fails, others still protect the system. This layered model is particularly important in modern enterprises where threats are complex, persistent, and often exploit multiple points of vulnerability.

GateKeeper Proximity Tokens Using Bluetooth Technology

GateKeeper Proximity strengthens defense-in-depth by securing a critical layer: user access control. By replacing typed credentials with wireless, proximity-based multi-factor authentication, GateKeeper reduces the risk of password theft, phishing, and password reuse. It also auto-locks workstations when users step away, preventing unattended access—one of the most overlooked physical security vulnerabilities. In doing so, GateKeeper adds a dynamic, continuous authentication layer that complements existing security tools like firewalls and antivirus software. As part of a defense-in-depth framework, it closes the gap between physical presence and digital access, enhancing both security and compliance.
