What is an OTP (One-Time Password)?
A one-time password (OTP) is a temporary password that is only active for a short period of time (as short as 30 seconds). OTPs are generally used as a 2nd factor of authentication in 2FA/MFA. The OTP can be sent to either the user's hardware token, email, their phone via push authentication, text SMS, or a software application.
OTPs are used for many purposes such as recovering/resetting passwords, confirming identity, banking logins, and more.
