What is an MSP?

Definition and Purpose

A Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a company or organization that supplies a range of services to support clients' IT needs. These services are typically managed remotely and are meant to ensure a that a client's IT systems operate securely, reliably, and efficiently. Many MSPs deliver their services remotely and often include cybersecurity, data administration, and helpdesk support, though many MSPs specialize in different industries to better fit the needs of a certain group of clients.

How do MSPs Work?

After employing an MSP, there are many steps that clients must take to tailor their service plan. This often starts with an assessment of the client's current IT infrastructure, where the MSP works closely with the client to discern where improvements can be made and how possible solutions can fit with their specific requirements. 

Based on this assessment, the MSP creates a Customized Service Agreement that outlines the scope of services and pricing. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) may also be drafted separately in order to define the client's expectations for performance and support.

Once these agreements are in place, the onboarding process can begin. This includes the deployment and integration of management tools and cybersecurity solutions with the client's existing IT systems. At this stage it is important for clients educate end users on these changes and how they can expect to benefit from them. At the same time, the MSP must implement an accessible and responsive support system to ensure a smooth transition.
