What is the NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre)?
Purpose and Function
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is the UK’s authority on cybersecurity and a division of GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters). Established in 2016, the NCSC’s core purpose is to help make the United Kingdom the safest place to live and work online. It provides expert guidance and technical support to government departments, businesses, critical infrastructure providers, and the public to protect against cyber threats.
The NCSC’s main functions include responding to major cyber incidents, securing national infrastructure, and offering practical advice to reduce cyber risks. It focuses on combating threats such as malware, ransomware, and phishing attacks, while also helping organizations improve their cyber resilience through best practices and risk management. In addition, the NCSC plays a central role in defending democratic processes and coordinating cyber defense efforts in partnership with international allies and industry.
As part of GCHQ, the NCSC combines intelligence, technical expertise, and national defense capabilities to protect the UK's digital space and ensure long-term cybersecurity for both the public and private sectors.
